Machine chest press: how to set it up and use it
Published October 19, 2026
The machine chest press is a seated press where you push two handles forward from your chest. Set the seat so the handles line up with the middle of your chest, keep your back and shoulder blades on the pad, press until your arms are nearly straight, and let the handles come back until you feel a stretch across your chest.

How to do the machine chest press
The machine sets the path, so all your effort goes into pushing instead of balancing. That makes it a good first chest press for beginners and a good way for anyone to take sets close to failure without a spotter. Changing the weight is one pin.
Steps
- Adjust the seat so the handles sit level with the middle of your chest, about nipple height, when you sit back.
- Sit with your back against the pad, feet flat, and pull your shoulder blades back and down before you grab the handles.
- Take the handles with your wrists straight and your elbows a little below your shoulders.
- Push the handles forward until your arms are almost locked, keeping your shoulders back on the pad.
- Let the handles return slowly until your hands are just ahead of your chest and you feel the stretch, then press again without letting the stack touch down.
Cues
- Handles at mid-chest
- Shoulders stay on the pad
- Slow return, no rest at the bottom
Common mistakes
- Seat too low so the handles sit at your shoulders: raise it until the handles meet the middle of the chest.
- Shoulders rolling forward at the end of each press: stop just before your shoulder blades leave the pad.
- Short reps that never reach the stretch: use the full range the machine gives, or lower the weight.

Muscles the machine chest press works
The machine chest press works your chest, the front of your shoulders and your triceps, the same muscles as a bench press. Because the machine holds the path, less effort goes to the small stabilizers and more of it can go to the chest itself.

How to set the seat height
Sit down and check where the handles are. They should line up with the middle of your chest. Too high and the press turns into a shoulder press; too low and your shoulders roll forward to reach them. Many machines also have a handle or foot lever that sets how far back the handles start: set it so you feel a stretch at the start without your shoulders being pulled forward.
Can you do the chest press machine instead of bench press?
Yes, for building muscle. The chest grows from hard sets, not from the tool. The machine is easier to learn, needs no spotter, and lets you push close to failure. The bench press trains you to balance a bar and is what to train if you want a bench number. Plenty of people use a free-weight press early in the session and the machine afterward.
How to breathe during the chest press
Breathe in as the handles come back toward you, brace, and breathe out as you press through the hardest part. On heavy sets you can hold the breath through the press and exhale at the top.
Questions
What muscles does the machine chest press work?
The chest, the front deltoids and the triceps, with less work for the stabilizers than a free-weight press.
Is the chest press machine good for building muscle?
Yes. It lets you take sets close to failure safely, which is what builds muscle.
Which machine is for chest?
The seated chest press and the pec deck are the main chest machines. Cable stations and the Smith machine also train the chest.
Is the machine chest press easier than bench press?
It is easier to learn and balance, so most people move more weight on it. That number does not compare to a barbell bench.
Why do I feel the chest press in my shoulders?
Usually the seat is too low or your shoulders roll forward at the end. Raise the seat and keep your shoulder blades back on the pad.
Should you lock your elbows at the top?
Press until your arms are nearly straight. A soft finish keeps tension on the chest; a hard lock adds nothing.
