The travel workout app that keeps your lifts moving on the road
Published October 27, 2026
A travel workout app for lifters has to know what each gym has and keep your progress intact while you're away. RIRLift saves every gym you train at with its own equipment, so plans and swaps fit the hotel's dumbbell rack and the next set never asks for a weight that isn't there. A hotel room with nothing in it gets bodyweight plans that progress by reps. When you get home, your home program picks up at the weight you'd earned.

What a lifter who travels needs from an app
-
Each gym saved with what it actually has
Save the hotel gym, the client's office gym and your home gym separately, down to the dumbbells they stock. Each saved machine remembers its own loads, so the home leg press never borrows numbers from the hotel's.
-
Swaps for what the hotel doesn't have
No barbell? The swap picker lists replacements that train the same thing with the equipment in front of you, and shows the weight Coach would start you at on each one.
-
Weights that stop where the rack stops
Every suggested weight is rounded to equipment you have. If a set says go heavier and the dumbbells top out at 50 lb, the weight holds instead of asking for one that isn't there.
-
A plan for a room with nothing in it
Bodyweight exercises progress by reps until you add weight, so a hotel-room session still moves forward. Every exercise opens to an illustration that works offline.
-
Trips that don't cost you progress
A skipped session changes nothing. Away three weeks or more, and the app offers Ease back in when you return: one week about 10% lighter. If you trained on the road, choose Pick up where I left off.
-
One less thing to carry
With an Apple Watch the whole session runs from your wrist: logging, rest timer, plate calculator and swaps.
Three sessions from a work trip
A hotel gym with dumbbells up to 50 lb
Nate travels two weeks a month for work. The hotel gym has a flat bench and dumbbells from 5 to 50 lb. He runs the 30-minute superset plan below while he's away.
| Exercise | You logged | Next session | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-Arm Dumbbell Row | Set 1: 50 lb × 12, 4 left (target 10, 1 left) | Set 2: 50 lb | 50 × 45 ÷ 40 ≈ 56, but the rack stops at 50. The weight holds rather than asking for a dumbbell that isn't there. |
| Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift | Set 1: 40 lb × 12, 4 left (target 10, 2 left) | Set 2: 45 lb | 40 × 45 ÷ 41 ≈ 44, rounded to the next dumbbell in the rack. |
| Goblet Squat | 50 lb, 15 / 15 / 14 reps, 2 left (target 14) | 50 lb × 15 | The weakest set hit the target, so next time it's one more rep with the same dumbbell. |
The plan works inside the rack he's got. Nothing on the screen asks for equipment the hotel doesn't have.
Two nights in a hotel room with no gym
No gym at this stop. Nate runs the no-equipment plan on the hotel carpet: Bodyweight A the first night, B the second.
| Exercise | You logged | Next session | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Push-Up | Bodyweight, 18 / 16 / 15 reps, 1 left (target 15) | Bodyweight × 16 | Bodyweight lifts progress by reps. The weakest set hit the target, so the next one asks for one more. |
| Pike Push-Up | Bodyweight, 10 / 9 / 8 reps, 1 left (target 9) | Bodyweight × 9 | The last set fell short, so the target stays at 9. |
| Reverse Lunge | Bodyweight, 16 / 16 / 15 reps, 1 left (target 15) | Bodyweight × 16 | Every set hit 15: one more rep per leg next time. |
Twenty minutes on the floor, and it still counts as progress on the plan.
Home after two weeks on the road
Back at his own gym, on his usual 4-day upper/lower plan. Sixteen days since he last trained there.
| Exercise | You logged | Next session | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barbell Bench Press | Last home session: 185 lb, 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 reps, 2 left (target 8) | 185 lb × 9 | Under three weeks away, so nothing changes. Same weight, one more rep, exactly where he left it. |
| Leg Press | Last home session: 320 lb, 13 / 13 / 12 / 12 reps, 1 left (target 12) | 320 lb × 13 | The home gym's leg press remembers its own loads. The hotel sessions didn't touch it. |
Travel weeks and home weeks live side by side. Neither one overwrites the other.

Make it fit you
-
Save each gym once
Add the hotel gym the first time you walk in and pick the equipment it has. Next trip to the same city, select it and the plan fits straight away.
-
Keep a travel program next to your home one
Group routines into programs and switch the active one when you leave. Add a single day from the program library if you only need one session.
-
Build the trip plan before you go
Type the session you want under Start empty workout, for example "30 minutes, dumbbells to 50 lb, no bench", and the app builds it. Or plan a full program on any computer in the web planner and import it.
-
Use the plate calculator in a strange gym
Hotel bar, unfamiliar plates: the plate calculator on iPhone and Apple Watch shows what goes on each side.
Questions
What's the best workout app for a hotel gym?
One that knows what that gym has. Save the hotel gym's equipment in RIRLift and every plan, swap and suggested weight stays inside it.
Can I work out in a hotel room with no equipment?
Yes. A bodyweight plan with push-ups, pike push-ups and lunges trains your whole body, and the app raises the rep targets as you get stronger. The home workout page has the full no-equipment plan.
Will I lose progress on a two-week trip?
Not in the app. Missed sessions don't lower your weights. Only after three weeks or more does it offer one lighter week, and you can skip it if you trained on the road.
What if the hotel dumbbells are too light?
Use slower reps, longer sets or harder variations. The app never asks for a dumbbell heavier than the rack has. Lifting with limited equipment covers the rest.
Do I need an Apple Watch?
No. The iPhone app does everything on its own. The Watch is there if you'd rather leave the phone in your room.
